O DNIU OCALAŁYCH Z HOLOKAUSTU
Michael Berenbaum oraz Jonathan Ornstein opublikowali poniższy felieton w Jerusalem Post, wzywając świat do utworzenia „Dnia Ocalałych z Holokaustu”. W ich słowach, „Ocalali zasługują na dzień radości, dzień świętowania. Nie dzień dzielony z potępieniem nazistów, a dzień na cześć ich życia, które budowali w kontrze do Holokaustu. Ocaleli z Holokaustu reprezentują to, co w nas wszystkich najlepsze, to, co najlepsze w duchu całej ludzkości. Są naszym skarbem i naszym światłem, i musimy to światło skierować w każdy ciemny zakątek naszego świata. Wzywamy świat do dołączenia do nas i świętowania inauguracyjnego Dnia Ocalałych z Holokaustu, 26 czerwca”.
Dlaczego 24.06?
26 czerwca jest dniem urodzin Ocalałego z Auschwitz Mariana Turskiego. W tym roku (2021), ponieważ 26 czerwca przypada w Szabat, Dzień Ocalałych z Holokaustu obchodzony będzie 24 czerwca. Wybraliśmy tę datę, by podkreślić znaczenie i wpływ tego sławnego historyka, dziennikarza i sumienia polskiej społeczności żydowskiej, a przede wszystkim jego przemowy z ceremonii z okazji 75 rocznicy wyzwolenia Auschwitz-Birkenau. Oto, co pan Turski miał do powiedzenia:
"Auschwitz nie spadło z nieba. Rozpoczęło się małymi formami prześladowania Żydów. Wydarzyło się i może się wydarzyć gdziekolwiek. Dlatego prawa człowieka i porządek demokratyczny muszą być bronione. Jedenaste przykazanie jest ważne: nie bądźcie obojętni. Nie bądźcie obojętni, jeśli widzicie kłamstwa historyczne. Nie bądźcie obojętni, kiedy widzicie, że jakakolwiek mniejszość jest dyskryminowana. Nie bądźcie obojętni, kiedy jakakolwiek władza narusza przyjęte umowy społeczne".
